Creating the Perfect Habitat for Your Exotic Birds

With their beautiful plumage, curiosity, and various vocalizations, exotic birds are not only interesting, but deeply gratifying to care for. And with proper care, they can become excellent companions who have the potential to live up to 70 years. Their longevity and day-to-day well-being, however, is largely dependent on their diet, lifestyle, and environment. For exotic birds to truly thrive indoors, they need the right cage and interior habitat.  

A Delicate Balance

Between the right style and size of cage, and what you place inside it, it’s necessary to find the right balance. Plus, exotic bird owners should give careful consideration to the cage’s location in the home, as well as regular sanitation of their bird’s enclosure. 

The right exotic bird cage should be twice as big as their wingspan, in both width and height. Ideally, they have enough room to move around in and reposition themselves for the best views of the room. Also, it’s crucial to allow for growth and activity levels throughout life stages.

Bar spacing of an exotic bird’s cage should be narrow enough so they cannot become entrapped, but not wide enough so they can escape. Choosing between stainless steel and powder coated cages is a personal choice, just be sure you can easily disinfect the entire cage without too much disruption or interference. 

Hygiene Matters

An essential component of exotic bird habitat concerns cleanliness. To reduce bacteria inside the cage, food/water dishes should be emptied and cleaned every day. Every surface inside and around the cage should be disinfected on a weekly basis, but be careful to only use bird-safe products. 

The cage’s substrate should be cleaned just as often, and may need replacing every so often. Check the cage routinely for any wear and tear, broken parts, and potentially weak security. 

Interesting Stations

An optimal environment for birds must include various perches, food/water stations, and toys. An ever-changing combination can allay destructive behaviors and promote mental and physical wellness. Change out sticks/branches, rocks, and bird-safe plants to stimulate their senses. 

Exotic birds enjoy foraging, chewing, climbing, and experiencing new flavors, textures, and sensations. Be sure they get plenty of light, but not too much direct sun, and lots of fresh air.
